Right now we've got our hearts set on opening a pizza place of our very own. Lately I'm daydreaming of renovations, long days on our feet, making small talk with strangers, shredding pounds of mozzarella, finding our place in a new community. Really, even the parts that don't sound fun still sound just right.

In the meantime it's research, planning, recipe tweaking, taste testing - eating pizza. Looks yummy, right? It gets better every single time. This weeks was pepperoni, pineapple + basil but I put down the camera and ate a slice before the basil even made it on to the pie.

I am seriously addicted. I want to hang out in her crazy Lisa Frank room and eat toast and eyeballs with her.

Kyary is an 18 year old Harajuku model and fashion blogger turned popstar. Funny faces are her specialty. The video above is for her debut single. She has a book coming out next month entitled "Oh! My! God! Harajuku Girl". Her sense of style is killing me - eclectic and totally tounge in cheek. Love all the weird headdresses.

If you can stand mass amounts of kawaii you should visit her youtube channel to watch her and friends karaoking and freaking the eff out.

Thrift Score: Handmade Ceramic Jug

I found this jug at Out of the Closet in Oakland yesterday. I love the look and feel of handmade ceramics. Even when a piece isn't my style the artist in me can still appreciate the time and the care put in to making it. But this is totally my style...

It's such a hippie buy, I'll admit it. For those of you that don't get it, the long braided leather piece is a shoulder strap. It's a canteen! I'll admit, it's not the most practical container. A water bottle or a travel mug is much lighter and you can throw it in your bag. This is not about being practical. It's about being eco-conscious, sure, but it's really about style. I like that it's heavy and rustic - it feels solid and substantial resting against my hip. Robert suggests filling it up with booze for Hardly Strictly Bluegrass. He totally gets it. Between now and then I'll probably use it as a coffee mug and if I can find a cork this week it's so coming camping with me.

This recent estate find is one of my all time favs. From the citrusey linen fabric to the classic cut, it captures the style of an era like few can. I could go on and on but this one speaks for itself. It reminds me of the stunning vintage Geoffrey Beane shift (below) being sold at C. Madeleines.

A Perfect Day

That's Robert. He's made of magic. We had plans to drive out of town for a picnic yesterday but our plans got derailed. Still, it was a perfect day...

Fried eggs, toast and coffee with hubbers before he went to work.

Laney swap meet for awesomeness. Treasures included: 60s black leather pumps, a killer mini dress, a deadstock 80s sweater skirt and a vintage Mexican blanket for me. Plus a cool art print mounted on wood, a 60's copy of Tortilla Flat by Steinbeck, a swank Patrick James camelhair vest and Trivial Pursuit Genus 5 for him.

Lanesplitter Pizza - yum! The best 'splitter slice that Robert has had and though I've had many, many more I agree. They were extra good. Thanks to Noah + Dan.

Redwood Park for a trail walk. I hadn't been there before and it was lovely. A creek, a fern lined trail, big trees. This is when the camera finally came out. The redwoods were hard to capture but I got some color and texture stuff I liked. This place would be awesome on a hot day and it gets bonus points for being so accessible. Hard to believe but after a decade I'm still discovering new parts of my own city. We ran in to my mom's car in the parking lot on our way out (surreal) and left her a love note.

Kona Club for a Scorpion Bowl. The world would be a better place if every bar offered a bowl of tropical  booze with extra long straws!

And finally Chinese takeout then home for a disc of Community and some couch time. I love having a friend that I can easily spend thirteen hours with. For me that sort of connection doesn't come along often and that makes it all the more special.

Currently Coveting - The Perfect Summer Sandals

I have a uniform: American Apparel deep v-neck tee, skinny jeans, keds, hoodie. This year I'm trying to break out of my comfort zone. I am slowly introducing more colors and patterns in to my closet but I still can't get out of my jeans. I know that there's a skirt + dress girl inside of me. Maybe she's just waiting for the perfect sandals. These Miu Miu's would make it sooo much easier. Chic but comfy and masculine enough to toughen up a girly dress. For a feminine touch I'd paint my toe nails California Coral. Now I just need to find an affordable alternative...

BHLDN, Beautiful

Planning my wedding was a strange experience. I remember putting too much thought in to some things, not enough in to others. I remember stressing out and giving up on more then one occasion but in the end I am proud of myself for keeping my cool and for letting go enough to have fun. Still, I occasionally have these moments, a twinge of regret: It could have been prettier, more polished, more organized. I could have worn a different dress. Then I brush it off and I remember that it was exactly the way we wanted it to be. It wasn't flawless, but if it was it wouldn't have been authentic. Given the chance to do it over I wouldn't change a thing.

Fortunately, Beholden wasn't around to break my heart and my piggy bank. Say what you will but the folks at Urban Outfitters, Inc. are brilliant. I am not usually a fan of lifestyle branding but they have it down to a science. I love Anthropologie and Free People. Terrain is lovely. Though I've outgrown it I'll admit that I also liked Urban Outfitters once upon a time, too. This year they launched the wedding brand BHLDN as an extension to the Anthropologie line. The offerings are vintage inspired, lush and decadent. In addition to the breathtaking dresses above they carry all the accessories that a bride may need, totally wearable bridesmaids dresses, even chic decor. I don't have a wedding to plan this year but I can't help loosing myself in their site anyway.

Two Generations of Style - Lisa Bonet & Zoe Kravitz

My experience is unique. I am mixed but I look white. My parents were hippies but I grew up in a conservative town. My family was always different, never looked like anyone else's family. My female fashion role models, both mother and grandmother, dressed fearlessly. I spent most of my childhood trying to fit in and my teen years struggling to find my own identity. My first experiment in style found me digging through my mother's closet, pairing my leggings with a bold 90s blazer for a middle school dance. I remember that closet well, packed full and incredibly eclectic. Vintage dresses hung next to 90s menswear, hippie skirts and slinky slips. It took me years to come around but in retrospect my mom was always the coolest. 

Enter Lisa Bonet, the ultimate 90s bohemian style icon. Growing up with "The Cosby Show" I had always looked up to artsy, free-spirited Denise. As cool as Denise was, Lisa Bonet was larger than life. Her style was crazy, inspired, carefree. She helped usher Generation X in to a new decade, we weren't kids anymore. By the time Lenny Kravitz sang "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" the 90s hippie style resurgence was in full swing and my friends and I were convinced that he was our generations Jimi. I remember seeing pictures of Lisa and Lenny with their baby girl and thinking that they had it made. A few years later things changed. Trends came and went, we traded Lenny Kravitz in for Kurt Cobain, Neo-Hippie in for Grunge and Lisa Bonet disappeared off of my radar. 

When I saw Zoe Kravitz on screen as Nia in "It's Kind of a Funny Story" I had no idea who she was. She was beautiful, her acting was on point and honestly I am always excited to see mixed chicks in movies or on TV, there is a curiosity and a kinship there. By the time the credits rolled I was surprised to find out who she was. Now I see her everywhere. She is the perfect combination of her parents. She has her fathers rock n' roll edge but she is every bit her mothers daughter. She is breathtaking and her style is fresh and flawless. Like her mother she could wear anything well but she makes brave choices anyway. Her look is eclectic and charming. She is young, vibrant and seriously hip. She took me back to the vault for this post, and for that I am thankful. I am so glad to see that Generation Y has it's own Lisa Bonet.

Textile Tease

I came across some awesome estate pieces today. The swatches above are all dresses from the 1960's. The red floral is a wiggle fit for the set of Mad Men, the other two are swinging mod shifts. I will probably post all three for auction next week but for now my mannequin will be very well dressed.

Thrift Score: Vintage Noritake Plates

I scored these vintage Japanese Noritake Progression plates at the Salvation Army in San Rafael yesterday.  The pattern is Tressa, produced from 1969-1978. I picked up 3 salad plates and 5 dinner plates, all in like new condition and all on sale for $1.00 to $1.50 a piece. I almost passed on the dinner plates because I didn't feel like I needed so many, fortunately my Mom was there to save me from myself.

I have recently decided to embrace my love of mix and match dishes. I junked all of my old stuff for a matching set a few years back but have found myself slowly piecing together a whole new collection. To justify buying randoms and to keep my cabinet under control I am sticking with a base of solid white and black & white pieces. These groovy new plates fit right in and I couldn't be any happier with them!

Stone Cold Fox

I am not a shorts girl but these 70's inspired beauties make me wish that I was. Summer has just begun and I'm already bored with destroyed denim cutoffs. It's definitely refreshing to see something unique. Each pair of Margarita Shorts is handmade out of Mexican blanket fabric by California lady label Stone Cold Fox. They are being offered as a limited edition through the Free People website. My favs are the red Navajo print. They cost a pretty penny and only come in tiny sizes but in a world of sweat shops and mass production I feel it's important to support small indie labels and to splurge on handmade when you can.

Speaking of handmade, does anyone know where I can find thin Mexican Blanket fabric like this? I'd love to make a skirt out of it. The Mexican blankets I've seen for sale would be too bright and too thick. I love the muted vintage look of this stuff.
